How to Make Mandazi

Mandazi is one of the popular dishes that you will find in the regions of East Africa. It is a dish that can be served for breakfast or as a snack.

Ingredients For Mandazi:

  • 4 cups of self-raising wheat flour
  • 1 tablespoon of salt
  • 4 tablespoons margarine or butter
  • 1/2 cup of sugar
  • 1/2 tablespoon black pepper
  • 1 cup of milk
  • 2 eggs

✦ The Steps to Prepare Mandazi

1✦ Mix the flour, salt, sugar and black pepper in a bowl

2 ✦ In a separate bowl, whisk the egg into the milk

3 ✦ Add the milk and egg mixture and mix it to form a dough

4 ✦Then add the margarine or butter and mix it well. 

5 ✦ Knead the dough to a smooth consistency

6 ✦Cover the dough and let it stand for about 45 minutes

7✦ Then divide the dough into four portions

8 ✦ On a rolling board or flat surface, use a rolling pin to roll out the dough, then cut  into your desired shapes

✦ How to Fry Mandazi

9 ✦Add the oil to a deep frying pan and heat it

10 ✦ Gently deep fry the pieces until they are golden brown on all sides

11✦ Once they are completely fried, remove the pieces and place them on a paper towel to drain

12 ✦ Let them cool down

✦ Some Tips

  • Use the self-raising flour instead of adding baking powder
  • Leave the dough overnight if possible
  • Put the pieces in the hot oil carefully
  • Cautiously turn the pieces several times
  • Do not deep fry too many pieces together
  • Try to drain most of the oil from mandazis
